Sri Lanka is truly a paradise for all bird watching enthusiasts. It has been recorded that there are more than 439 species with 236 being resident 203 migrants and the rest being occasional visitors or vagrants. A High degree of endemism of the islands avifauna is well demonstrated by the presence of 33 endemic species and 68 subspecies. Most of the endemic species found in the wet zone or the hills, such as Ceylon whistling thrush, Ceylon wood pigeon, Yellow eared bull bull, Ceylon white eye are frequently seen in Nuwara Eliya. Pied thrush, Eye browed thrush, Indian pitta and Kashmir flycatcher are some of the famous migrant bird species who sail over to Sri Lanka to avoid the northern winter in their mother land between the months of September and March.
